Trainer: Caroline Egan is the Training and Development Manager for Carmichael Centre for Voluntary Groups and focuses on developing and delivering customised training and organisational supports for groups engaged in organisational capacity building and governance development. Caroline has twelve years third level experience lecturing and training in the areas of industrial relations, human resource management, strategy and marketing, delivering programmes in Ireland and Finland. She has been involved with the boards and management committees of voluntary community groups for over ten years. She holds a Master of Business Studies degree from NUI Galway and her research interests include the management of voluntary organisations and community entrepreneurship.

Content
This programme will demystify Boards members' roles and responsibilities and give you tools to enhance your contribution and the effectiveness of your Board. This course outlines the purpose of the board as a whole, particularly in relation to governance and management. We then examine the specific roles of individual committee members and resourceful ways in which work can be divided up between members. We will look at effective ways of managing a meeting to get results. The course will finish with a discussion on practical solutions to deal with typical problems arising within boards.

Outcomes
By the end of the course participants will be able to:

*      Identify their own expectations of and motivation for board membership

*      Describe the purpose of their board and its responsibilities

*      Identify the different roles of board members

*      Identify good practice in operating as a board
